MAP Workshop titled "Teaching Mathematics with Games, Puzzles and Hands-on Activities" on August 11, 2012

Dear Members,

On behalf of MAP Executive Committee, I would like to invite you for the MAP workshop to be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012. Details of the session are as follows:


Title: Teaching Mathematics with Games, Puzzles and Hands-on Activities

Target Audience: Teachers of grades 4 - 8
Facilitator: Ms. Rozmin Tejani


About the facilitator:
Ms. Tejani has completed her graduation with Bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies (with a specialization in teaching grades 4-8) from University of North Texas, USA.  She brings about 6 years’ experience of teaching Mathematics to grades 5 and 6. She has mainly worked with children from low income areas. During this time, she has also served as a Chairperson for Mathematics committee and provided training to address high need areas for teachers. She has been involved in implementing an “After-School Peer Tutoring Program” between grades 5 and 3 students. She has also been elected to create Mathematics Assessments and Curriculum for grade 6 level for the school district.  She is currently pursuing her Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree at Vanderbilt University in International Education Policy and Management. Recently, she has done her internship as a research analyst with the Research and Policy Studies (RAPS) department at Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED).

We would like to iterate that in order to provide quality professional development to all our valued members and to run this association effectively we need your full support and punctuality. ASSET Session on " Let's Make a Difference" on July 28, 2012

Dear Members,

It is a pleasure to inform you that ASSET is organizing a movie session on July 28, 2012. The movie is about a child Trevor who gives an idea of perfect world by sharing his theory of Pay it Forward. The movie can be interpreted differently but we will try to see it in light of Quranic teaching and hadiths to understand human responsibilities for making a better world.

The session will:
·         Reiterate some inspiring points from the movie
·         Discuss the idea of pay it forward and contextualize it in our society/classroom
·         Reflect on some Quranic verses and hadiths to understand our ethical responsibility
·         Develop a project to motivate students for the idea expound in movie.

Brief intro of Ms Husna Arif 
Ms. Husna Arif completed double Master degrees in Teaching and Muslim Societies and Civilization from University of London, UK.  Before this she has done Masters in Science and Public Administration.

Husna is an educator with an experience of more than eleven years in teaching and teacher’s training. She has conducted many workshops for teachers and school principals on various topics. Currently, she is working with ITREB, P (Shia Imami Ismaili Tariqah and Religious Education Board for Pakistan) as an Educator. Her research interests are interactive ways of teaching history, developing students’ critical thinking skills and students’ assessment for learning.

Ms. Nadya Akram is an Early Childhood Educational Development (ECED) graduate from Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development. She has been working with early years teachers and young children for last eight years. She has also worked as an Academic Coordinator at the AL-Murtaza School. As a teacher trainer she has conducted workshops for different organizations.

MAP - “The Effective Use of Scientific Calculator” on Saturday, July 14, 2012

On behalf of MAP Executive Committee, we would like to invite you for the Scientific Calculator training workshop scheduled on Saturday, July 14, 2012. Details of the session are as follows:

Who should attend:       Teachers of SSC/HSC, O & A Level

The purpose of this workshop is to provide hands-on training to teachers of Secondary/ Higher Secondary Schools and O & A Level schools to learn the effective use of Casio's latest ES Plus Series of scientific calculators in teaching (for more information please see the attached flyer).

Due to limited resources and to ensure quality only a group of 40 participants will be accepted on first come first served basis. Further registration will be stopped once the workshop sitting is fully subscribed.

MAP - Summer Sessions on "Innovative Ways of Teaching, Learning and Assessing Mathematics" from July 10-13, 2012

Registration Fee:      Rs. 1,500/-

Seats for the session are limited (40), therefore, members are requested to please fill out the attached form and submit it along with registration fee of Rs. 1,500/- (in cash or pay order, in the name of AKU-IED) to PTAN Office (PTAN c/o IED-PDC, 1-5/B-VII, F.B. Area, Karimabad, P.O Box 13688, Karachi-75950) between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last date for the registration is Monday, July 9, 2012.

PN: There will be an addition post-workshop session on ‘Handheld Technology in Mathematics: Effective Use of Calculators’ to be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 9 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. This workshop will be organized by CASIO.
