ASSET: Ninth Olympiad on theme "Dignity of Labour" on October 10, 2015

Ninth ASSET Olympiad
Dignity of Labour

Dear Heads of Institution / Individual Member,

It is a pleasure to inform you that ASSET is organizing the Ninth ASSET Olympiad on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at AKU-IED. The theme of the Olympiad is “Dignity of Labour”.

Dignity of Labour indicates that all types of work are respected equally, and no occupation is considered superior and no labour is undignified, rather different only. As society has progressed there has been a continuous struggle to give equal status to all forms of labour. However, to date there is still consistent stigma attached to labour, especially those who are attached to more manual forms of work. It is of course obvious that society is composed of human-beings but within each society we have different social systems where people are treated differently in accordance to one’s status/ labour. And this raised many questions about human dignity. Is human dignity tied to one’s status in society? Should dignity be tied to class and social status? And of course, what is the reason behind this social stratification? There are countless other ethical questions that we need to ask ourselves.

This Olympiad has been designed with the aim to explore the perception of children about the role of labour in society and the issues that they face. Through this platform, the participants (students and teachers) would be given an opportunity to learn and express what they feel about human dignity and their responsibility in society and to develop a positive, healthy and realistic attitude towards dignity of labour.

This event has been designed to ensure a stimulating experience for all the participants. The students will either prepare skits or make posters.
