ASSET session titled “Thinking Critically About Social Issues” on May 9, 2015

This month ASSET is organizing an interactive session onThinking Critically About Social Issues”. The details are as follows:

About the Session:
In this interactive workshop, participants will review the concepts of citizenship, human rights and social dilemmas. They will examine some rights and responsibilities of citizens and the controversies that arise when people have different opinions about social issues.

The workshop will employ group discussion and activities that can be taken back to classrooms.

Facilitator’s Profile
Anika Khan works as Senior Lecturer at the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC), SIUT. She has a Master in Bioethics and is involved in promoting ethics education and critical thinking skills in schools in Karachi. She also holds a diploma in remedial teaching and assessment of children with specific learning disabilities. Her background since 1996 has been in education and before joining CBEC in 2012, she was a faculty member at READ, Karachi. Currently, she is visiting faculty at READ and Ziauddin College of Speech Language Therapy (ZCSLT) where she conducts courses on learning disabilities for teachers. Anika conducts workshops and sessions on ethics education and mainstream as well as remedial teaching methodologies for schools as well as the general public.

SAP Session titled "Create Interest in Science Classroom through Interactive Teaching Strategies" on May 9, 2015

·         Explore few interactive teaching strategies for Science classrooms (e.g. story-telling, discussion,         concept mapping)

She has done Masters in Science (Chemistry) from Karachi University and Masters in Education (Teacher Education) from AKU-IED with distinction in course work. She has contributed both at school and community level as well as worked with organizations like PTAN, Edlinks, Ministry of Education and AKU-IED as a resource person. Her major interest areas are assessment, educational management, teacher leadership, environment, Science education and ICT integration.

By the end of the session the participants will be able to:

·      Realize the importance of interactive teaching especially in case of Social Studies
·      Integrate resource material for making teaching and learning process more interactive and based on self-learning.
·      Explore the essentials of making interactive resources for class room teaching.
·      Develop some resources for the teaching of the different concepts of Social Studies.

Mr. Ali Usman is working with Sindh Education Foundation (SEF) as Deputy Director, Learning Support Unit. Earlier, he worked with Aga Khan Education Service Pakistan as Program Associate, Arts and Aesthetics. He has conducted several sessions on different teaching and learning resources and also developed resource kits for different organizations i.e. Aman Foundation, Teacher Resource Centre (TRC) etc. Also, in collaboration with Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, he has developed teaching resource kit for grades 1, 2, and 3 according to the syllabus of Ministry of Education, Kabul. Mr. Usman has been representing SEF on different fora.

Ms Aatika Agha has done Masters in Economics, Montessori Diploma and certification course in Early Child Development. She has been conducting training sessions for NGOs and miscellaneous community arrangements. She has worked collaboratively with numerous educational institutes and has been called upon as a key presenter in numerous educational training programs in the under privileged areas to create awareness about modern methodologies and techniques of interactive classroom skills and child’s holistic development. Furthermore, she has managed the internal and external flow of communication within the organizations for increased productivity.        

Pollution levels are as high as they are due to human consumption and their interaction with the world causing destruction to the earth and all species living on earth.
