 Happy New Year!

 We grew professionally as well as community during the year 2012, so it is time to reflect on ASSET activities in the year 2012 and set goals and do planning for the year 2013.

 On behalf of ASSET Executive Committee, we call a General body meeting of ASSET members regarding this important activity. We would appreciate your presence and sharing of your needs and requirements and most importantly your ideas in making ASSET a vibrant educational association.

Topic:  CREATING HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOLS 

  Fostering integrated and coordinated programs in which children themselves play a full and active part.

ABSTRACT: Health education is one of the important components of the health promotion. There can be no promotion without health education. Health education provides factual knowledge about diseases and knowledge about its prevention. Schools offer a convenient way of reaching a large number of children and young people; therefore health education in schools is very good strategy for improving health. In addition schools are within communities and children can spread health information that they learn in their schools to their own communities through the Child-to-Child Approach.
 
Objectives:

By the end of this topic participants will know:
 
·         Importance of Health education and promotion
·         Planning health Action programs
·         Lesson Planning and teaching a health topic
·         The Child-to-Child Approach

About the workshop:        The mainstream classrooms have children who are facing problems in learning, adjusting in the school environment, are withdrawn, are hyperactive or come across as disruptive problem kids. These are the children who have some special needs. Special because these are the needs beyond what you as a mainstream teacher recognize, and fulfill. This workshop will help you to recognize, identify and start the process of addressing these needs, making your classroom more learning and learner friendly.

ASSET - "The Seventh ASSET Olympiad" on Saturday, February 09, 2013 at AKU-IED

Dear Head of Institutions / Individual Members,

It gives me a great pleasure to inform you that our team is organizing The Seventh ASSET Olympiad on Saturday, February 09, 2013 at AKU-IED. The topic of the Olympiad is:
“What can I do for Pakistan”
The Olympiad has been designed with the aim to explore the perception of children about their responsibilities towards Pakistan and to develop a positive, healthy and realistic attitude towards the betterment of Pakistan as a nation. Through this platform, the participants (students and teachers) would be given an opportunity to learn and express what they feel about it and what their views are about it. The event will focus on what can be done rather just worrying about it as explained by Steven Covey (article attached).

This event has been designed to ensure a stimulating experience for all the participants. The students will either prepare skits or make posters and in the end they will participate in a panel discussion, while the teachers will attend an informative session on the topic. Participating students will be briefed and facilitated in the preparation of posters/skit. The details of the programme are as follows:

Concluding the activities
 
Who should/can participate?
  • The contest is open to all schools of Pakistan.
  • Each school will be required to send one teacher and four students from Classes VIII to X. Out of them
    • Two students should be expert in making poster and
    • The other two should be skilled in preparing and performing skits
What preparations should the participants undertake?
  • Students selected must primarily possess good comprehension and presentation skills along with either being expert in making poster or skilled in preparing and performing skits.
  • All necessary stationary and work materials will be provided by ASSET-PTAN Team for the development of the posters and preparation of skits.
  • A panel of judges will evaluate the group outputs and decide the winners.
  • The decision of the panel will be final and undisputed.
Event Date and Venue:
The Seventh ASSET Olympiad will be held at The Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) on Saturday February 09, 2013. 
  • Participants will be required to arrive latest by 8:30 a.m.
  • Attendance and related formalities will be completed by 8:55 a.m. to ensure that the event starts on time at 9:00 a.m.
  • The event will end at about 1:30 p.m.
Last date of registration: 
  • Schools are requested to send in the duly completed registration form (attached) latest by Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
  • The registration form must be completed in all respects and the names of the students nominated by the schools must be clearly spelled and presented in CAPITAL letters.
  • The forms must be submitted along with the registration fee at PTAN Office, IED.
Registration Fee:
A token of Rs. 1,600/- (Rupees: One Thousand Six Hundred Only) is payable as registration fee and must be attached to the registration form either in cash or in the form of pay order in the name of “The Aga Khan University”

Conducting Effective Meetings, an Essential Skill for School Leaders
  
  Do you understand the dynamics of conducting meetings?
  •   Are you conversant with the way of making your suggestions more open, more flexible and more negotiable, and your messages softer and more effective?
  •   Are you always at ease when you present cogent, lucid, and balanced arguments; give strong, neutral, or tentative opinions; and show strong, neutral, or tactful disagreement?  Do you feel comfortable expressing strong/partial support and total/tentative opposition?
  • Do you know how to persuade and how to compromise?
 If the answer to any of these questions is NO, then this workshop is for you!

This workshop is going to be a platform to sit together and see how efficient we are when we conduct meetings. This workshop focuses on one of the most powerful tools of communication – language. Whether we preside over or attend a meeting, our language matters most. School Head Teachers’ Association (SHADE) invites you to attend this workshop on Saturday, January 19, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m at Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development.

Brief Introduction:

Mazhar Ahmad (facilitator), currently working as a Lecturer in English at Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi, has done his MA in English Literature and Linguistics. As a Subject Lead Teacher, he has conducted workshops on various aspects of educational leadership and the use of language in the academic context. His major interest areas are educational leadership, teacher training, and the English language teaching, along with enduring interest in education, religion, history and philosophy.

Shairose Irfan Jessani (co-facilitator), currently working as a Vice Principal – Academics at Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi, has done Masters in Science (Chemistry) from Karachi University and Masters in Education (Teacher Education) from AKU-IED with distinction in course work. She has contributed both at school and community level as well as worked with organizations like PTAN, Edlinks, Ministry of Education and AKU-IED as a resource person. Her major interest areas are assessment, educational management, teacher leadership, environment, science education, ICT integration.
