APT - Teaching and Learning Vocabulary: Let’s Have Fun (March 17, 2012)

Dear Member,

Our last academic session “Appreciating Diversity in Primary Classrooms; Implications for Teachers’ Practices” was received very well by our members. Valuing our members’ feedback and input, this month’s session will be conducted by Mr. Tahir Javed on “Teaching and Learning Vocabulary: Let’s Have Fun"

Abstract:
While the teaching of macro-skills (reading and writing mainly) along with grammar remains the major focus in or ESL classroom, vocabulary receives little comparable attention. The most common mode of teaching vocabulary is to have the learners memorize long lists of words and their meanings. Unfortunately, however the method of trying to learn ‘words-meanings’ in isolation turns out to be rather unproductive and inefficient.

In this workshop the presenter puts vocabulary building in a wider perspective and suggests that the ESL teacher must

1.      Have a proper understanding of what is meant by ‘vocabulary’;
2.      Try to foster some general habits and attitudes, conducive to vocabulary development, among the learners; and
3.      Use some specific vocabulary building skills and methods (including ‘dictionary skills’) in the classroom

Details of the session are as follows:

Time:   9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Date:    Saturday, March 17, 2012
Venue: AKU-IED, Karimabad

Mr. Tahir Javed  is  an experienced and enthusiastic educationist with strong background in school management, teacher development, evaluation and assessment, language teaching and learning. Presently engaged in Project Management serving 1500+ young students in underprivileged areas of Karachi with an aim to equip them with basic competence and confidence as producers and consumers of English Language.

Note: To ensure quality only a group of 30 will be accepted on first come first serve basis. Remember punctuality is the key to success.
