APT- “Creating Child Friendly Classrooms Using Positive Disciplinary Strategies" on Saturday, October 1, 2011

This month’s topic of our APT session is “Creating Child Friendly Classrooms Using Positive Disciplinary Strategies" which is going to be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011.

Details of the session are as follows:

Objective:
1. Develop an understanding of Corporal Punishment.
2. Differentiate between Punishment and Discipline
3. Recognize the reasons and effectives of corporal punishment on a child.
4. Create a child- friendly environment in the classrooms by using positive
disciplining strategies.

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

MAP- Eleventh Mathematics Olympiad for the Students of Grade VIII on Saturday, October 22, 2011

Dear Member,

The Mathematics Association of Pakistan (MAP) is striving to promote a culture of doing and investigating mathematics among teachers, as well as the children of Pakistan. Promoting such a culture would help prepare the learners to tackle the challenges of the 21st century in the light of recent developments in the field of mathematics and science. After successfully organizing the Tenth Math Olympiads, this year MAP is organizing its Eleventh Olympiad for young Mathematicians of Grade VIII (current) from 62 different schools all over Pakistan. This event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 9:00am – 2:00pm at Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), Karimabad, Karachi. The participants will get opportunities to work on challenging and interesting mathematical problems in the areas of arithmetic, geometry, statistics, algebra and reasoning and logical thinking. All participants would be awarded certificates.

Keeping in view the significance of this event, we are expecting several requests to participate from different schools. Therefore, we have decided that selection would be on a first-come-first-serve basis. ASSET- ‘A Walk through Pakistan’ in collaboration with The Citizens Archive of Pakistan.

Dear Institutional Heads/Individual members

It gives me a great pleasure to inform you that on October 1, 2011, ASSET is organizing a special event relating to 64th Pakistan Independence Day in collaboration with The Citizens Archive of Pakistan. The theme of the event is ‘A Walk through Pakistan’

Brief on Theme of the Event:

‘A Walk through Pakistan’ is an interactive 3-hour session aimed at educating its audience by taking them through historical facts at the creation of Pakistan. Teachers and students will embark on the memorable journey with the aid of audio, video and fun group activities.

The students will learn about prominent historical leaders of the subcontinent, Pakistan's geography at the time of partition and some of the key issues our society is currently faced with. Simultaneously, the teachers will be shown a series of interviews and photographs of the people who witnessed Pakistan becoming an independent state as well as the conditions during the formation of the country in order to develop in the teachers a wider and more comprehensive understanding of the events. Moreover, the teachers will explore other supporting sources of history to make their teaching more effective and interesting.

This event has been particularly designed to bring about a stimulating experience for all the participants.

About The Citizens Archive Pakistan:
The Citizens Archive of Pakistan (CAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the cultural and historical preservation of the country. It seeks to educate the community, by fostering awareness of our nation's history and instilling pride in Pakistani citizens of their heritage. The CAP has focused its attention on the tradition of oral story-telling in Pakistan, emphasizing the need of such narratives on national identity in dialogue form. The organization has three main goals: to preserve and provide access to the archive, to build and support educational programs, and to develop educational products based on the testimonies accumulated.

Who should/can participate?
• Three students from Grade V - VIII from each institution.
• Students will be accompanied by one teacher from the institution
• Every member of ASSET

Venue: The Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED)
Time: 09:30 a.m. to 02:00 p.m.
Dress code: It will be appreciated if children are in their regional dresses or in green and white colored dress
