Session Objectives:

The session explores:

Ø  Differentiate between Values , Ethics , Moral and Principles
Ø  Why it is important to develop values
Ø  To understand different approaches to develop or alter values
Ø  Hands-on activities to develop/alter values  in students and teachers

Facilitator’s Profile

Ms. Gulzar Khalfan is a facilitator and Teacher Trainer. She is Executive member of SHADE and APEE at AKU-IED. She has done her Master in Educational leadership from Australian Catholic University, Advanced Diploma in Human Development (Early Childhood Development) from The Aga Khan University, Master in English from NUML. She was associated with AKESP, The City School and Beacon house School System. She currently works as Freelancer trainer.

Theme: Science, Technology, Society and Environment (STSE)

Dear Colleague,

The Science Association of Pakistan (SAP) is organizing its Tenth Science Olympiad for grade VIII on November 28, 2015 at The Aga Khan University - Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), Karachi.

This Olympiad is a part of our continual efforts to make teaching and learning of science a rejoicing and rewarding experience for both students and teachers. During the event, the students will get an opportunity to participate and compete in various science activities such as puzzles, quiz, model making and problem solving through internet surfing-secondary data collection approach. The winners would be awarded with shields and certificates and all participants would be provided with certificates of participation. A team of 3 students could be accompanied by a science teacher or any other representative from the school.

Please note an orientation session will be conducted from 09:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on November 10th, 2015 to facilitate the interested schools and answer queries if any.

The schools (1 Student & 1 Teacher) are requested to confirm their participation for the orientation session by October 31, 2015 through below mentioned email or phone numbers.

Registration for SAP Olympiad:

·         Registration fee for grade VIII is Rs. 1800/- (Covering 3 Students & 1 Teacher).
·         Registration fee for an additional teacher is Rs. 200/-
·         Government schools would be allowed 50% discount.

Criteria to Participate in the Tenth Science Olympiad

·   The Olympiad will be held on November 28, 2015 at Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development
·    Each Institute / School is invited to send 3 students from class VIII with one of their Science teachers/ representative from the school.
·         A jury will decide the winners, and its decision will be considered final.
·         Entry in the Olympiad is open to all. All the entries will be entertained on first come first serve basis.
·         Last date for Registration is November 24, 2015.
·     There are four categories of competition. Each team is required to compete for all four categories namely Puzzle roundQuizModel Making and Problem Solving.
·         It is compulsory to participate in all four categories.

The key assessment criterion of each category is given below:

1. Puzzles
Puzzles will be given for testing the students’ scientific knowledge.
     Assessment Criteria
·         Scientific knowledge
·         Team work
·         Time management

2. Quiz
Quiz on “Famous Inventions, Discoveries & Scientists”
     Assessment Criteria
  • Correct identification/answer
  • Time bound

3. Model making
The students will construct a model from the given material.

Assessment Criteria
·         Exhibits appropriate scientific concepts
·         Creativity
·         Selection of the appropriate material
·         Explanation of the concept
·         Time management
·         Team work

4. Problem Solving
Problem solving is an investigative approach to learning. It requires students to use a variety of skills to acquire results.

In this category, a problem or situation along with material will be given. The students will be required to solve the problem by choosing the appropriate method and material.

Assessment Criteria
·         Identification of the problem
·         Understanding of the task and the scientific concept underlying it
·         Exploring relevant scientific information
·         Futuristic, economical and applicable solution(s) of the problem
·         Logical and creative display of the solution (s) of the problem
·         Time management
·         Team work
