ASSET Summer Session on “Teaching Social Studies in Globalizing World”, June 8-9, 2012

Dear Members,

It is a pleasure to inform you that ASSET is organizing a 2 day summer session in the month of June 2012 titled “Teaching Social Studies in Globalizing World”.

Study of society forms the key basis for social studies teaching. In the context of globalization, the world has become a “global village” whereby different cultures and societies are coming into contact with each other. The resultant contact is influencing the very nature and characteristics of the society in which we live. If the nature of society is changing due to globalization, how could social studies curriculum and teaching may respond to that change? How can we make social studies curriculum and teaching relevant for globalizing world? These are some of the questions which this short course will explore.

Topic: “Teaching Social Studies in Globalizing World”

Brief Intro of Facilitator
Dr AL-Karim Datoo is a sociologist of education and assistant professor at AKU-IED. He has done his PhD from McGill University, Canada. His research interests are: sociology of curriculum, inter-cultural education and globalization and cultural identity. He teaches Social Studies Education (MEd) at Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development.

SAP- Summer Short Course "Explore Elements Through ICT and Other Interactive Experiences” from June 14 to June 16, 2012

Dear Member,

Learning to teach effectively is a science in itself and it keeps on evolving with new research and development in the field of education. There are number of innovative and interactive pedagogies encouraged by Science Association of Pakistan since its inception. This year Science Association of Pakistan is organizing a summer short course on “Explore Elements Through ICT and Other Interactive Experiences”. This short course will provide science teachers an opportunity to explore, discuss and extend their understanding of different interactive teaching pedagogies of science.

KEY FEATURES OF THE SHORT COURSE:
1. The short course is designed for new, experienced, primary, secondary & higher secondary schools science teachers
2. Participants will engage in interactive teaching pedagogies
3. Opportunities to discuss and extend their learning of  addressing alternative framework

OBJECTIVES FOR THE SHORT COURSE:By the end of this short course, participants will be able to:
• Define atoms, symbols, elements, molecule, formula and equations
• Explore atom , shells and subshells through ICT tools
• Discuss different strategies to address alternative framework pertaining to chemical bonding and related concepts taught at secondary level

ASSET - Climate and Weather of Pakistan on May 26, 2012

Dear Member,

It is a pleasure to inform you that ASSET is organizing a session in the month of May 2012 on Climate and Weather of Pakistan. 

The workshop has been designed for geography, Social Studies and Pakistan Studies teachers as well as for everyone who wants to know more about the world we live in. The participants will know about the elements of weather and climate, the factors that influence these elements and finally the climatic zones of Pakistan and their characteristics. They will read and draw themselves the climatic maps and learn about some amazing natural phenomena.

Brief Intro of Facilitator

Khalid Masood Gul is a Mechanical Engineer from the Metallurgical University in Ukraine; he had been working at Pakistan Steel for more than 25 years. Presently he is associated with BAHRIA Foundation College as a teacher of Pakistan Studies “O” level, as his passion was always in learning and teaching. His major interest is in “Islam and Science”, on which he has done lots of research and studies and conducted several workshops.

APT - ‘Through Writing to Reading’ on May 19, 2012

Dear Member,

This month Amina Baig and Shaheena Daewani will be conducting a session called, ‘Through Writing to Reading’.

Abstract
In primary classes, most of teachers’ efforts are devoted to developing reading skills of students. They apply various methods and strategies to facilitate reading development of their students. In order to facilitate children in this process, it is important for teachers to know and be aware of different methods and approaches for reading development. In the same connection, this workshop is designed to orient teachers about ‘language experience approach’ to reading development. Through this workshop, they will get hands on experience of how this approach develops reading skills and also explore some possibilities to implement this approach in their classrooms. The activities and discussion in the workshop will provide opportunity to teachers to understand and learn about a different approach for reading development.

Details of the session are as follows:

Objective:
  1. Develop an understanding of Language Experience Approach for reading development of young language learners
  2. Introduce Language Experience approach
  3. Explore possibilities for implementing this approach in the classroom
